Frequently Asked Questions

The Merit-Based Incentive Payment System is a method to participate in the Quality Payment Program. Eligible Clinicians must report and submit data for all the MIPS categories. MIPS has 4 categories and they are; Quality, Promoting Interoperability, Improvement Activities, and Cost. By reporting data for each of these categories an eligible clinician earns points, and the maximum points a clinician can earn is 100. Failure to meet the MIPS requirements by the deadline will result in a 9% penalty.
No, only those clinicians that meet the eligibility requirements for MIPS must report data before the deadline. To be eligible for MIPS, a clinician must meet the following criteria: • Bill more than $90,000 for Part B covered professional services. • See more than 200 Part B patients. • Provide more than 200 covered professional services to Part B patients.
Failure to report data for MIPS will result in a 9% penalty deduction from your collections.
PQRS and Medicare Meaningful Use ended in 2017. Both PQRS and Meaningful Use have been combined into MIPS. PQRS has become the Quality Category and MU has become the Promoting Interoperability category.
For the Quality category, data must be reported for the whole year. For the Promoting Interoperability and Improvement Activities categories, data must reported for a minimum of 90 days.
You need 75 points to avoid the 9% penalty.
No, it’s not necessary to have an EHR to complete MIPS. You need an EHR to earn points for the Promoting Interoperability category but if you don’t have one, an exemption can be applied for the category. This will reweight the points for the PI category to the Quality and Improvement Activities categories. We can file the exemption for you so that you do not lose out on any points for not using an EHR.
